Transvaginal sonosalpingography and laparoscopy:A comparative study

  • Objective To evaluate the diagnostic value of transvaginal sonosalpingography(TSSG) for fallopian tube lesions. Methods TSSG and laparoscopy were performed for 59 patients(118 fallopian tubes) with primary or secondary sterility using methylene blue as a contrast to compare their reliability for the patency of fallopian tube. Results The diagnostic rate of TSSG for the fallopian tube patency was 83.05%,with a sensitivity of 86.3%,a specificity of 77.78% and a Youden index of 0.64.The diagnostic rate of TSSG for the abnormal morphology of fallopian tube fimbrial end was 83.89%,with a sensitivity of 88%,a specificity of 76.74%,and a Youden index of 64.74.The diagnostic rate of TSSG for the pelvic adhesion was 88.14%,with a sensitivity of 92.5%,a specificity of 78.95% and a Youden index of 71.45.No statistical difference was observed in the diagnostic rate of TSSG and laparoscopy for fallopian tube lesions. Conclusion TSSG is a reliable procedure for detecting fallopian tube lesions and the first choice of methods in diagnosis of primary sterility.
