The role of palliative surgical treatment for malignant periampullary tumors

Abstract
From June 1959 to September 1983,147 patients with tumors of periampulla of Vater were admitted to our hospital.Among them,54 cases underwenl radical resection,70 cases palliative procedures and 23 cases only had medical management.Of 93 cases,on whom radical resection had been undergone there were 56 males and 37 females,whose ages ranging from 31 to 86 years(a mean age of 59.02 years).According to the pathological diagnosis,25 cases were the carcinoma of ampulla of Vater,18 cases the carcinoma of middle and lower part of biliary tree, 49 cases the carcinoma of the head of pancreas and 1 case the carcinoma of duodenum.As to the type of surgical intervention,in 44 cases internal drainage has been done,in 19 cases external drainage and in 7 cases laparotomy only.The operation mortality rate was 8.6%(6/70).The average survival time of internal drainage,external drainage and laparotomy alone were 11.7 months,9.01 montgs and 5.89 months respectively.
