Correction of congenital club foot by Ponseti method

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the results of Ponseti method for correction of congenital club foot. Methods: Twenty-seven patients(22 males and 5 females)with congenital club foot were treated with Ponseti method from October 2002 to December 2007. Club foot was unilateral and bilateral in 20 and 7 patients,respectively.The average age of patients at the beginning of treatment was 3.87 months(ranging 5 days-16 months). Results: Thirty-two feet restored their contour with normal function of the ankle. Cavus and more than 10 degrees of dorsiflexion disappeared.Adduction of the forefoot occurred in two feet,which was corrected by transferring the tendon of anterior tibial muscle to the third cuneiform. Conclusion: Ponseti method can effectively treat early club foot.
