Abstract
Objective: To observe the osseous healing process after alveolar ridge distraction with TiNi-SMA distractor and to evaluate the new bone’s quality. Methods: 15 canines were divided into three groups, and being killed accordingly 1,3 and 6 months after distraction. The mandibles were examined clinically, radiologically, and histologically. Results: 1,3 and 6 months after distraction, the height of the augmented alveolar ridge decreased 5%,8% and 11% accordingly.Bone mineral density was lower than the blank control three months after distraction. But the index increased and showed no significant difference six months after distraction. Conclusion: The healing process after alveolar ridge distraction with TiNi-SMA distractor performs well and the new bone is strong enough for secondary implant placement.
