Smoking of medical staff and its related knowledge

  • Objective To investigate the knowledge about smoking of medical staff in a hospital in an attempt to provide reference data for the control of smoking. Methods Smoking-related knowledge of 184 medical staff(including whether they smoke,whether they believe that smoking is harmful to health,and what means of giving up smoking) was investigated with questionnaires in May 18-22,2009. Results Medical staff at the age of 41-50 years smoked the largest number of cigaretetes,accounting for 22% of all smokers and those at the age of ≤30 years smoked the smallest number of cigaretes,accounting for 10.5% of all smokers.A large number of medical staff at the age of ≥51 and a small number of them at the age ≤30 believed that smoking was harmful to health.All the medical staff at differtent ages had the knowledge about the two methods for giving up smoking,accounting for 38.6%,48.6%,29.3% and 57.1%,respectively. Conclusion Education on giving up smoking should be strengthened in medical staff with stress laid on the occupational characteristics.
