In vitro release of Triclosan from antibacterial bone cement

  • Objective To observe the rules of Triclosan release from bone cements at different time points and its clinical efficacy against bacteria. Methods Bactericidal activity of Triclosan and gentamicin sulfate was observed by placing bone cement on three plates with different concentrations of bacteria.The diameter of bacteriostatic effect was measured at different concentrations of bacteria.The diameter of bacteriostatic effect was measured at different time points. Results The diameter of gentamicin sulfate bacteriostatic effect was greater than that of Triclosan inhibitory effect during the first 24h at the same dosage, but the diameter of Triclosan bacteriostatic effect was greater than that of gentamicin sulfate after 48h, indicating that the bacteriostatic effect of Triclosan on E.coli is weaker than gentamicin sulfate. Conclusion The activity of Triclosan exhibits a time-dependent manner of its slow-release functions at the same dose.The bacteriostatic effect of Triclosan on Gram-positive bacteria is greater than gentamicin sulfate.However, its bacteriostatic effect on E.coli is weaker than gentamycin sulfate.
