Comparison of metabolic syndrome detected in a college of Beijing during 2006 and 2008

Objective: To compare the detection rates for metabolic syndrome（MS） and its influence factors in an institution of Beijing during 2006 and 2008. Methods: A standard questionnaire and 75g oral glucose tolerance test（OGTT） were applied in the investigation.The levels of plasma glucose（fasting and postprandial）,blood insulin（fasting and postprandial）,lipid,and uric acid,and creatinine,as well as body height and weight,waist circumference（WC）,blood pressure,body mass index（BMI） of patients with MS were measured.The detection rate of MS in these patients was analyzed. Results: The prevalence of MS determined by CDS and IDF was 8.9% and 9.9%,respectively,in 2006,and 15.1% and 17.4%,respectively,in 2008.The prevalence of MS increased with aging.The prevalence of diabetes mellitus,prediabetes,hypertension,hypertriglyceridemia or/and hypo or hyper density lipoproteinemia,BMI≥25kg/m² and waist circumference abnormality（male≥90cm,female≥80cm） was 4.2%,8.1%,25.6%,36.4%,48.5% and 30.7%,respectively.The prevalence of these diseases was significantly higher in 2008 than in 2006（3.5%,6.6%,16.6%,30.3%,41.5%,20.6% vs 20.0%,22.7%,54.2%,20.1%,16.9%,49.0%,P＜0.01）. Conclusion: The faculty in a college of MS and its related diseases is high in the institution of Beijing with a higher detection rate of MS and its related diseases in 2008 than in 2006.The prevalence of hypertension and abnormal WC is significantly increased.
