Combined pemberton procedure and femoral osteotomy for congenital dislocation of hip

  • Objective To explore the clinical outcome of combined surgery for congenital dislocation of hip(CDH)in children. Methods A retrospective analysis of 190 cases(212 hips)of CDH treated with pemberton procedure in combination with subtrochanteric shortening and derotation of the femur in December 1997-May 1998 was carried out, according to McKay clinical criteria for hip joint and Willett radiological measurement.Of the 190 patients(29 males and 161 females),141 had CDH in the left side,27 in the right side and 22 in the bilateral side, respectively.Their average age at operation was 4.2 years, averaged 1.5-8 years. Results Of the 190 patients,181 were followed up for 1-8 years, averaged 29.6 months.Excellent result was achieved in 183 patients and good result in 33 patients, the total effective rate was 96.4 %. Conclusion The clinical outcome of CDH treated with pemberton procedure in combination with subtrochanteric shortening and derotation of the femur is very good.Combined pemberton procedure and femoral osteotomy is one of the most ideal treatment modalities for CDH in children.
