Clinical study on old renal inadequacy with integrated backscatter (IBS)and second harmonic ultrasound imaging (SHCI)

  • Objective: To assess whether IBS and SHCI would improve renal ultrasound imaging for evaluating renal function. Methods: In 55 old male patients, IBS and SHCI were performed in 40 normal kidneys and 40 kidneys with renal inadequacy compared by quantitative assessment of Acoustic Densitometry(AD). Results: the peak intensity, the area under the curve were significantly higher than the control group (both i>P<0.05). Conclusion: The results showed that IBS and SHCI were a safe, efficient new technology for assessing renal function different from the Doppler Ultrasound, improes ultrasound images .The recent availabity of AD helps to distinguish between normal and abnormal renal function, and should help to reduce operator variability.
