Disease spectrum of military pilots unqualified for flying in 2007-2009

Objective To provide reference data for aero-medical support by analyzing the disease spectrum of military pilots unqualified for flying in 2007-2009. Methods Clinical data about 225 military pilots unqualified for flying admitted to General Hospital of Air Force in November 2006-November 2009 were collected and classified according to their disease,involved specialty and age. Results The top 10 diseases of military pilots unqualified for flying were hypertension,headache,neurosis,ametropia,acceleration intolerance,ground syncope,neurasthenia,cervical spondylosis,vertigo,and lumbar disc herniation.The first 5 involved departments were neurology,cardiology,orthopedics,ophthalmology,and otorhinolaryngology.Pilots of the age of 30-44 years accounted for 68.89% of all pilots unqualified for flying. Conclusion Hypertension,functional diseases of nervous system,spinal disease,and ametropia are the main diseases of military pilots unqualified for flying in recent years.Importance should be attached to the control of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and the effect of occupational and social-psychological factors on their flying.
