Abstract
Blood glucose, serum insulin and cortisol levels were determined in 23 cases after various abdominal operations, both glucose and cortisol levels being higher than normal, while that of insulin is not significantly attected. These changes were most marked on the first postoperative day,and persisted for at least 3 days after operation. The intensity and duration of the changes varied with the degree of trauma inflicted upon the patients. In order to prevent postoperative hyperglycemia, the rate of infusion of glucose solution should be appropriately controlled, and insulin should be given.
