Long-term efficacy of multiple fetal liver infusions in the treatment of aplastic anemiaereport of 29 cases

  • Twenty-nine consecutive patients with aplastic anemia were treated by multiple fetal liverinfusions (FLI).Ten cases (34.5%) with short term response to FLI were defined as cured orremission 1-3 years after infusions.Four cases (13.8%) with short term obvious reponse to FLIremained in remision until 2 years follow-up,but two of them had relapsed, one evolved to PNHand the another to erythroleukemia 2-3 years after FLI.One case (3.4%) had marked improve-ment during 2 years follow-up.Five cases (17.2%) showed transient response. The remaining ni-ne cases (31.1%) showed no response at all either short or long term.It seemed that clinicalefficacy of FLI was not related to the number of transfused nucletaed cells, age of the patientsand the duration of the disease while low-grade fever had marked influence on the response toFLI.Among fifteen cases who had received FLI from different sexs, only one instance was de-monstrated with chimersim of the opposite sex chromosomes for a short period. The present studysuggests that FLI might have some stimulating factors acting in some way to promote recoveryof the hemopoietic function in patients of the aplastic anemia.
