Correlation between metabolic syndrome and ankle-brachial pulse wave conduction velocity

  • Objective To analyze the correlation between ankle brachial pulse wave conduction velocity (baPWV) change and metabolic syndrome (MS) as well as other influencing factors in subjects at health examination. Methods MS was evaluated in 1 003 subjects during their health examination according to the criteria established by the Diabetes Mellitus Association under the Chinese Medical Association, and their BaPWV was detected. Male and female subjects were divided into 4 groups, respectively, according to their baPWV quartiles. Multiple-stepwise regression was employed to analyze the independent risk factors for baPWV grading. Male and female subjects were then divided into 5 groups, respectively, according to their abnormal metabolic components. Variance analysis was used to compare the differences in baPWV among the 5 groups. Results Multiple-stepwise regression revealed that age, systolic blood pressure (SBP), oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) 2h BG were the independent risk factors for baPWV grading in male subjects, while the age, SBP and hypertension history were the independent risk factors for baPWV grading in female subjects. The baPWV level increases with the increased abnormal metabolic components in all subjects(P<0.01). Conclusion Age, SBP, OGTT 2h BG, hypertension history are the independent risk factors for baPWV. BaPWV level increases the increased abnormal metabolic components.
