Abstract:
The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing worldwide, and diabetic complications have become the main causes of end-stage eye disease and end-stage renal disease. Therefore, there is a need for continuous in-depth research on the pathogenesis of diabetes and related complications and the development of newdiagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Animal model is an indispensable means of experimental research. In recent years, diabetic miniature pig model has received extensive attention and is considered as a bridge for the translation of rodent model research results to clinical practice. Based on the research experience of our laboratory, this paper reviews the research advances in the establishment and application of diabetic models in miniature pigs, including: the advantages of miniature pig in diabetes research, type 1 diabetic models of miniature pig, type 2 diabetic models of miniature pig, diabetic models of genetically modified miniature pig, diabetic complications research in miniature pig and technical issues need attentions, so as to assist diabetes researchers to quickly understand the relevant content and provide valuable experience.
