Abstract:
Objective To investigate the effects of contrast baths on the function of distal radius fracture after conservative therapy.
Methods From September 2011 to September 2013, a total of 63 patients with distal radius fracture admitted to rehabilitation department of Chinese PLA General Hospital were enrolled and they were randomly divided into two groups:contrast bath combined with training group and control group. Patients in the contrast bath and training group were given contrast baths 20 min/d and training 20 min/d, while patients in the control group were given exercising training 20 min/d. The range of movement (ROM), visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, disability of arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH) score, and grip strength were recorded at 3 months and 6 months after treatment.
Results The ROM, VAS scores (4.2±1.1, 2.7±1.3), DASH score (89.7±1.7, 95.4±1.5) and grip strength (43.2 ± 4.1, 72.5±6.3) in the contrast bath and training group were significantly higher than the control group (4.9±1.3, 3.6±1.4; 84.5±1.4, 90.7±1.5;40.1±4.5, 66.5±4.7;
P< 0.05).
Conclusion Contrast baths and exercising training can accelerate the functional recovery of the distal radius fracture with conservative therapy.
