Abstract:
Objective To evaluate the relationship between the domains of simplified Chinese version of the Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) questionnaire and satisfaction in adult scoliosis patients after surgery.
Methods From June 2008 to February 2011, clinical data about 83 adult scoliosis patients (40 males and 43 females, with an average age of 49.8 years and BMI 26.6 kg/m
2), who underwent surgical correction in our hospital, were selected and retrospectively analyzed. All patients underwent a posterior spinal fusion of at least 5 vertebraes and had completed the Simplified Chinese version of SRS-22 questionnaire preoperatively and 5-year postoperatively and their preoperative and 5-year postoperative radiographic parameters were also measured. Paired t-test was used to compare preoperative and 5-year postoperative scores. Spearman correlation was used to evaluate the relationship between 5-year SRS-22 satisfaction score and changes in SRS-22 domain scores and radiographic parameters.
Results There was statistically significant improvement between preoperative and 5-year postoperative SRS-22 domain scores and the Coronal radiographic parameters (
P ≤ 0.002). Between the changes in SRS domain scores and the SRS satisfaction score at 5 years postoperative with the degree of low to moderate correlations were found:mental (0.24), activity (0.30), pain (0.37) and appearance (0.56). Correlations between satisfaction and all radiographic parameters were either very low or low. The 5-year satisfaction scores of 3.0 points or more were achieved in 90% of the patients, while 4.0 points or more in 67% of the patients. A moderate ceiling effect was shown.
Conclusion The appearance domain score in the simplified Chinese version of SRS-22 questionnaire and ODI reflect patients' satisfaction to scoliosis correction surgery in adults.
