Abstract:
Objective To evaluate whether supplemental fibular plate fixation will affect the clinical outcomes of closed ipsilateral distal tibia fractures treated by intramedullary nailing.
Methods Sixty-two patients with closed tibia-fibular fractures admitted to our hospital from September 2010 to September 2017 were included in our study. Twenty-eight patients with fibular fixation(case group)were treated by tibia nailing combined with fibular plate fixation, and thirty-four patients without fibular fixation(control group) were treated by tibia nailing alone. Clinical outcomes were analyzed and compared between two groups.
Results There was no difference in tibia malalignment, loss of reduction, delayed union, nonunion and infection between two groups(
P> 0.05).
Conclusion In our study, fibular plate fixation has no advantage in treating closed ipsilateral distal tibia fractures with intramedullary nailing, thus it is not recommended to be a routine procedure.
