Abstract:
Objective To investigate the prevalence of caries, periodontal diseases,as well as the awareness and behaviors of oral health care among coal miners in Jizhong area,in order to provide evidence for the development of oral health care.
Methods Caries, periodontal disease, gastroesophageal reflux (GER),the awareness and behavior of oral health care in 1 116 workers in a coal mine in Jizhong area were investigated using cluster sampling method.
Results The prevalence rate of caries was 80.02%,and the mean decayed-missing-filled tooth (DMFT) was 3.62±2.89,with the caries filled ratio of 12.33%.The detection rates of gingival bleeding, calculus periodontitis and periodontal health were 88.53%,98.92%,56.0%,and 9.32%,respectively.The prevalence of caries, gingival bleeding and periodontitis increased with age, whereas caries filling ratio and periodontal health rate decreased with age(
Pfor trend<0.05).The caries prevalence rate in miners with GER was significantly higher than that of minors without GER (83.92%
vs 78.18%,
P=0.041).The results of oral questionnaire survey showed that only 10.06% of the workers brushed their teeth with Bass method, and 52.28% of them never did teeth scaling. The number of workers who brushed their teeth for 2-3 times per day decreased significantly with age (
Pfor trend=0.000),with age under 35 year-old accounting for 32.13%,35 to 44 year-old accounting for 22.72%,and over 45 year-old accounting for 18.34%.The awareness of oral health knowledge in workers was generally low:37.29% of workers thought that gingival bleeding was abnormal,63.38% knew that sugar could cause dental caries,51.71% knew that bacteria could cause gingivitis,52.85% knew that bacteria could cause dental caries,41.22% knew that brushing teeth could prevent gum bleeding, and 63.76% believed that oral diseases could affect overall health.
Conclusion The oral health of coal miners in Jizhong area is poor, and urgent measures for prevention and treatment of oral diseases are required.
