Abstract:
Epidemiology studies have shown that in coronary heart disease(CHD)patients there is a higher rate of impaired glucose tolerance(IGT)and in those with manifest clinical symptoms their plasma insulin response to glucose challenge is often found to be increased. In this prospective study,a comparison of the oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT)and insulin releasing test(IRT) was made in 24 patients with CHD and 24 normal controls matched for age,sex and weight. The results showed that the pattern of their response during OGTT was altered in that the peak values of both glucose and insulin declined more slowly and their mean values at 3 hour were higher in the group of patients as compared with those in controls. The frequency of IGT was also higher in the patients with CHD(0.05<P<0.1).Although the values of glucose and insulin in response to OGTT and IGT were higher among CHD patients with hypertension, hypercholesteronism and hypertriglyceridemia than those without such changes, they were not statistically significant. The significance of the latter results requires further study
