FREE NERVE TRANSPLANTATION WITH INTERFASCICULAR ANASTOMOSIS FOR THE TREATMENT OF MISSILE INJURIES OF PERIPHERAL NERVES

  • Abstract: During the counter attack for self-defence against Vietnam. there were 289 patients with peripheral nerve injury admitted to our hospitals. In 96 cases. free nerve grafting with interfascicular anastomosis has been performed. The results of 73 patients (80 nerves) who were followed up for 2 years were analysed. The result was satisfactory in 73.8% of all the patients, and among them. the result was graded exc-ellent (M5、M4 andS4、S3+) in 46.3% and good (M3 and S3) in 27.3%. For the group in which total transplantation was done. satisfactory result was obtain-ed in 67.3%, while it was 88% for partial tranplantation. The final result of repair of the radial nerve was the best among the three main nerves of the upper limb, being satisfactory in 100% of cases, while that of median and ulnar nerves were 70.6% and 61.9% respectively. For the lower limb. we achieved 66.7% satisfactory result in nerve repair. Basing upon these results in this series, we considered that nerve grafting with in-terfascicular anastomosis is a fairly satisfactory method for the treatment of missile injury of peripheral nerves. The influence, that the causes and extent of injury as well as the length and num-ber of bundles of graft required to bridge over defects of the injured nerve. exerted on the final result of the operation is discussed.
