Abstract:
Objective To compare the advantages and disadvantages of low temperature radio frequency plasma-assisted tonsillectomy and conventional tonsillectomy for school age children at the age of 7-14 years.
Methods One hundred school age children at the age of 7-14 years who were going to undergo bilateral tonsillectomy were randomly selected and divided into plasma group and control group(conventional tonsillectomy).Tonsillectomy was performed in plasma group using the Evac70T & A cutter connected to the Ent,Coblatorll plasma treatment system(Arthrocare Corporation,USA) under general anesthesia.Conventional tonsillectomy was performed in control group by the same surgeon.Operation time, intraoperative and postoperative bleeding, postoperative pain and hospital stay time,as well as average cost, were compared between the two groups.
Results The operation time, intraoperative and postoperative bleeding, postoperative pain and hospital stay time were less in plasma group than in control group. The average cost was higher in plasma group than in control group.
Conclusion Radio frequency plasma-assisted tonsillectomy is a safe and effective procedure with less pain and a higher cost compared with conventional tonsillectomy.
