Abstract:
Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and its impact factors in the elder cadres.
Methods: 1954 elder cadres were investigated by checking blood glucose 2 hours after taking 100 g steamed bun for screening, and combining with 75 g OGTT for diagnosis.
Results: 1. As a whole, the prevalence of diabetes was 11.1% and 17.7% for impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) 2. 54.4% of diabetics and 99.7% of IGT patients were newly diagnosed in this screen. Normal fasting blood glucose was found about 58% in the newly diagnosed diabetics. 3. 100g steamed bun test was well tolerated in old population.
Conclusion: The prevalence of diabetes and IGT in old cadres is rather high in our study. The general survey for diabetes is necessary for early diagnosis and treatment in old patients with the criterion of blood glucose ≥ 7.2 mmol/L 2 hours after taking 100g steamed bun.
