Acute graft-versus-host: disease (GVHD) following bone marrow transplantation-report of a case

  • Abstract: A female patient with acute myelogenous leukemia underwent bone marrow transplantation during her second complete remission. The conditioning regimen included Ara-C 550 mg in three days and CTX 50 mg/kg/day for two days followed by 600 tad TBI (10 rad/min). In order to prevent GVHD, MTX was administered immediately after transplantation. Successful engraftment was achieved by the finding that all of the cells obtained from bone marrow and peripheral blood displayed XY karyotype of the donor on the +10, 16, and 20 day after transplantation. Acute GVHD developed on the day+19 posttransplantation. The characteristic clinical menifestations were nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramp abdominal pain, and hematochezia. High dose methylprednisolone was administered without response. The patient died on the day+23 postransplantation. The literature related to the problems of GVHF was reviewed.
