TIBIAL LENGTHENING FOR THE TREATMENT OF SHORTENING OF LOWER LIMB-REPORT OF 23 CASES

  • Abstract: This article reported 23 cases (18 boys, 5 girls) of tibial lengthening. The patients’ age ranged from 8—13 years. The indications for tibial lengthening were: 1. a shortening of at least 3cm; 2. one or two groups of leg muscles being of normal power; 3. the skin, muscles and bones of the leg being normal; 4. the general condition of patient being satisfactory. The tibia was lengthened in an average of 4.1 cm. The following complications have been observed: nonunion of the tibia in 2 cases; equinus deformity of foot in 3; an infection of pin tract in 2; refracture through lengthened part of tibia in 1. Basing on the result of leg blood flow determination, we believe that constant traction to lengthen the tibia at the rate of 3 mm daily up to the desired lengthening is feasible and safe. However, the tibia should never be lengthened to the extent of over 20% of its own length.
