Abstract:
Objective: To observe the effect of treating blepharoptosis by simplex skin excision.
Methods: The strength of levator palpebrae superioris muscle, the value of margin reflex distance(MRD) of upper eyelid and the degree of ptosis were measured pre-operation and post-operation in 21 patients aged more than 75 with blepharoptosis. The general appearance of both upper eyelids and the width of palpebral fissure was observed.
Results: MRD value was(0.5±1.8) mm pre-operation and(2.8±0.9) mm post-operation,and the difference was significant(P<0.05).The width of palpebral fissure was increased markedly and symmetrical in both eyes. The visual field of patients was improved and the eyes could be closed naturally.
Conclusion: The simplex skin excision can be considered one of ideal methods treating blepharoptosis, especially in patients aged more than 75.
