Ovarian cystic teratomas in postmenopausal women (A clinical analysis of 38 cases)

  • Abstract: 38 cases of postmenopausal ovarian cystic teratoma admitted from Jan. 1955 to Dec. 1984, all confirmed by pathological examination were analysed, the occurrence rare was among all cystic teratomas treated in our hospital being 8.15% (38/466 cases). The incidence of patients with malignant change is 13.16%, significantly higher than 2.10% in 428 premenopausal cases. 4 of 5 cases in this group were squamous cell carcinoma. Athough cystic teratoma may remain benign for a long time without malignant change. Once the tumor enlarges rapidly and/or when abdominal pain, distention as well as pressure symptoms occur we must be especially watchful against the possibility of malignant change. The results of our analysis are quite similar to those of other authors.
