RADIOLOGIC DIAGNOSIS OF MULTIPLE MYELOMA

  • Abstract: The X-ray manifestations of 42 cases of histologically proved multiple myeloma have been analyzed. The age ranged from 15 to 85 years. Thirty-one were males and eleven were females. Eight points about radiological diagnosis were discussed.
In spite of the protean x-ray patterns, there are some characteristic features in multiple myeloma for making the diagnosis. It can not be ruled out even in the absence of roentgenologically demonstrable finding. Since general osteoporosis has been considered as one of diagnostic signs, the possibility of multiple myeloma should de suspected in patients under middle age with general osteoporosis of unknown etiology or in patients over middle age with bony destruction of unknown origin.
Radiologic study is necessary in the diagnosis of multiple myeloma not only for defining the nature of the disease but also for follow-up examination, although the diagnosis is made mainly on the basis of evident alternations in hemotology and immunohematology, etc.
