Abstract:
Objective To study the diagnosis and treatment of brain metastasis from epithelial ovarian carcinoma.
Methods Clinical data about 6 patients with brain metastasis from ovarian cancer admitted to our hospital from January 2008 to August 2011 were retrospectively analyzed with the related literature reviewed.
Results The median age of the 6 menopausal patients was 58.5 years at diagnosis.Their serum CA125 level was elevated and decreased after treatment. The CA125 level increased when the disease relapsed.CT or MRI showed intracranial metastatic lesions in the patients.Of the 6 patients who received surgery and platinum-based adjuvant chemotherapy,3 underwent radiotherapy and 1 craniotomy.Of the 4 patients who received chemotherapy,2 died.
Conclusion The prognosis of patients with brain metastasis from epithelial ovarian carcinoma is poor.Surgery and platinum-based postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the main treatment modalities for brain metastasis from epithelial ovarian carcinoma. The prognosis of brain metastasis from epithelial ovarian carcinoma is related with its clinical stage, differentiation and platinum sensitivity.Serum CA125 can be used as an indicator during follow-up.
