Study on relationship between presence of serum carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA)and transfusion hepatitis

  • Abstract: The serum CEA in 559 random-selected donors was tested. The individuals subjected to examination consisted of 5 groups:(1)healthy subject group,(2)that with increase in SGPT,(3) that with positive HBsAG,(4)that with elevation of SGPT and HBsAG,and(5)smokers.The result demonstrated that CEA was markedly increased in groups(2)and(3),with statistical significance(P<0.05).It may be considered, therefore, that the positive serum CEA may indicate the occurrence of hepatic disease. As to the possibility of trasmitting hepatitis by the use of blood from the healthy but CEA-positive donors,in the practice in our hospital so far we did not confront with this condition in 23 cases transfused with the blood from healthy but CEA-positive donors.Undoubtedly, this point still requires further investigation.
