Abstract:
Objective To summarize the epidemiologic characteristics of sick and wounded persons after Wenchuan earthquake on may 12,2008,and their medical treatment in General Hospital of Chengdu Military Area Command.
Methods Epidemiologic characteristics of 1 070 sick and wounded persons admitted to General Hospital of Chengdu Military Area Command in May 12-28,2008,after Wenchuan earthquake,the distribution characteristics of their visiting time,and their treatment and prognosis,were retrospectively analyzed by reading their medical records and investigating with questionnaires.
Results Six hundred and ninety-two sick and wounded persons were admitted to General Hospital of Chengdu Military Area Command 48h after Wenchuan earthquake,accounting for 64.7% of the total 1 070 admitted sick and wounded persons.Of the 1 070 sick and wounded persons,710(66.4%) were admitted to Department of Orthopedics.The most frequent injuries were extremity fractures(34.7%),soft tissue injuries(17.9%),spinal fractures(11.4%),pelvic fractures(4.6%) and crush syndrome(1.6%).Of the 5 sick and wounded persons who died(0.5%),3 died of crush syndrome,1 died of abdominal injury accompanying hemorrhagic shock,and 1 died of earthquake-related cardiac infarction,a non-traumatic disease.
Conclusion Bone injury is the most common trauma occurred in earthquake.The number of sick and wounded persons sent to hospitals is the greatest 24-48h after earthquake.The mortality rate of crush syndrome patients is rather high.
