Abstract: The result of our clinical and experimental studies determining the distribution of PGE in the ileocacum,sigmoid mucosa and peripheral venous plasma was described in this report. The data indicate that （1）overproduction of PGE in the inflamed colonic mucosa associated with active BID （ulcerative colitis and crohn’s disease） may contribute to the pathophysiology of these condition.As the inflammation was reduced,amount of the PGE diminishes and symptoms subside:（2）high levels of PGE were extracted from the peripheral blood of active BID patients and reduced by successful drug therapy.（3） In colitis （or irritable colon syndrome） and normal group,the mean PGE pg/mg of colonic mucosa and plasma was not significantly different from each other.
