Gastrointestinal diseases in pilots from a land-based air force troop

Abstract: Objective To provide the evidence for the treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal diseases in pilots by studying its distribution in hospitalized pilots from a land-based air force troop. Methods The ratio of hospitalized cases and times/total hospitalized cases and times in pilots with gastrointestinal diseases from 2007 to 2012 was counted. The relation between the kinds of gastrointestinal disease, the types of aircraft they flied, the age of pilots, and their professional title was analyzed. Results The ratio of pilots admitted to hospitals due to gastrointestinal diseases increased year by year. The frequently encountered diseases were chronic gastroduodenitis and functional gastrointestinal disorders. The incidence of gastrointestinal diseases varied with the age of pilots and the types of aircraft they flied. However, the professional title of pilots had almost no effect on gastrointestinal diseases. Conclusion Physiological and mental education should be strengthened in pilots of land-based air force troops, the flight protective equipments should be improved in order to reduce the incidence of gastrointestinal diseases.
