Visual experience of patients undergoing vitreous resection under local anesthesia

Abstract: Objective To investigate the visual experience of patients undergoing vitreous resection under local anesthesia. Methods Ninety-three patients who underwent vitreous resection from July to December 2010 in Center of Anesthesia and Surgery of our hospital were included in this study.Their visual experience was investigated 30 minutes before and after operation with standard questionnaire. Results Seventy-four eyes(79.6%) experienced the light during the operation.Of the 74 eyes,19(20.4%) could see the moving objects,51(54.8%) only experienced the light, and 23(24.7%) could not see any light during the operation.White and yellow lights were the most common 2 color lights experienced by patients during the operation.Fear occurred in 48 patients(51.6%) during the operation. Conclusion Most patients can perceive light during operation.Understanding the visual experience of patients during operation under local anesthesia can help them decrease their fear.
